Germany has more than 200 long-distance cycling routes connecting medieval towns with breathtaking natural settings. The Moselle cycling route is called the "Moselradweg" it runs from the in the small French town of Perl to the German city of Koblenz. The 155 mile ride heads north from the city of Perl, cyclists will cross through a region where wine has been cultivated for 2,000 years.
Cyclists will pass trough the city of Trier, most likely the oldest city in Germany founded in or before 16 BC. Highlights include Bernkastel-Kues, Traben-Trarbach with its art nouveau architecture and the city of Kröv, renowned for its distinctive half-timbered houses and wines. Historic castles dot the way from here on, including Arras, Cochem, Ehrenburg, Eltz, Marienburg, Metternich, Pyrmont, and Thurant. While some are in plain sight, others are hidden in valleys along the way.
The route, clearly marked by sign posts, runs mainly on farm tracks and asphalt paths along the Moselle River. Cyclists can enjoy breathtaking views from the banks of the river to the vineyards dotting the hills to the left and right. Flat terrain for the most part makes the trip suitable for cyclists of all abilities.
Cycling the Rhine River in Germany is an incredible experience. Cycling in Germany is easily done, as there are bike paths beside most roads. Also many bike trails run through the country side, far away from the roads, so there is no fear of being taken down by a car or a crazy driver. Romantic Rhine is between Bonn and Heidelberg. The best towns are Boppard, St. Goar, Oberwessel, and Bacharach. Dozens of castles line the sides of the Rhine.
