Portofino

If Portofino means fine port than they know what they are talking about.     2004

A great view of Portofino, Italy  from the Castle.       2004

A great shot of Portofino Italy.       2004

The castle and church on the hilltop overlooking the town of Portofino below.     2004

You have to walk through the church and cemetary to get to the castle.         2004

The Portofino Castle is fairly small as castles go, the the views are stunning!      2004

It's a good little walk up to the castle but well worth it and the flowers and gardens are nice up there too.   2004

Bob in the castle overlooking town. The castle was full of pictures of famous people who had visited.      2004

As I said before, great view looking out the castle windows.        2004

Water in this part of the Italian coast is really spetaculer.     2004

Cinque Terre

The seaport of La Spezia is were provinces of Tuscany and Liguiria meet, it is

also the home of the Italian Naval Academy and only a stones throw from Cinque Terre.       2010

I took a photo of the national park sign which shows the towns locations. I've been to this

place 3 times, but only in 2004 Bob, Todd and I walked the full distance, the southern 2 legs are easy,

but the northern 2 are a workout, but worth the effort.          2004

Cinque Terre is made up of 5 villages and a spectacular coast line, connected by walkways.        2010

This Bar dell' Amore sits on the edge of the cliff between 2 towns.
We have stopped here on all three of my Cinque Terre.        2009

It was a little early to have a beer, but this is a view to die for and we could rest our tired feet.        2010

The town of Manarola is tightly packed and they park their boats

on rollers in the narrow walkways of the town.       2010

They park their boats near their front doors.      2010

A distant view of the town of Manarola.          2010

A view of the walkway near Manarola.          2010

Swimming is popular here.    2004

Cactus growing out of the rocky walls had brightly colored flowers.       2009

The walkways are carved into the steep mountain side.    2009

There is a lot of walking, but the views are worth every step.       2009

Some of the walkways toward the northern towns have no railings.    2009

This is part of what was built by the Germans in WW2 to hide their fortifications.         2010

At one point in the walk you have to take this long zig-zag of stairs to

get to the highest town of Corniglia which is the 3rd of the 5 villages.      2009

A train station with a view and much of the ride is inside the mountain.       2009

The grapes were growing all around us on this adventure.       2009
The long walk up the stairs was worth the walk. More great views.         2009

Hiking the rough northern most leg. Entering Vernazza from the North.       2004

Entering Vernazza from the South     2009

Arriving by footpath from the south to Vernazza is a breathtaking view.      2009

The great view after the long hike from Monterossa to Vernazza, Cinque Terre.      2004

Having pizza and beer in Vernazza at an outside eatery.      2010

The old fortress structure was now a restaurant. Very Italian thing to do I would say.     2009

Jeannie hanging out by the boat launch area (We took the train to Cinque Terre).          2009
People swimming near the rocks past the boat launch. Looked very dangerous to me.         2009
The old town church          2009

People sitting around eating a piece of the local pizza which is square and thick.

Also Pesto was invented in Cinque Terre they say.        2010

Taking a break before heading back to La Spezia by train.     2010

There are only a few beaches in Cinque Terre.    2004

Monterossa's beach.       2004

The town map painted on tiles.     2004

Monterossa is the northernmost of the five villages.       2004
