Zuiderzee and Waterland

Carl, Bob and I toured the dykes by bike at the edge of the Zuiderzee.

Notice how low the farmland is below. At times it's below sea level.    2003

A small house out in the country side in North Holland.         2003

A hay barn that changes its height as the hay gets used.        2003

Horses (and cows) without fences, or at least it appears that way.

They have canals not fences to keep them in their pastures.    2003

Windmills in the countryside in the waterlands area.        2003

I never got tired of seeing windmills.     2003

A small fishing and boating town on the Zuiderzee about 10 miles north of Amsterdam,

the town is only a couple streets wide.       2003

I took a bike trip up to the north to what they call the Waterland, because this area was once under water.

This is the town of Zunderdorp, don't blink your eyes or you will miss it, even on a bike.         May 2012

A side view of one of the old manual bridges.    May 2012

I talked to a female cop and she told me about this huge nature/bicycle park about 12 miles

north of Amsterdam and it was awesome. The weather that day was fantastic, a high around 80 F

and only a few clouds most of the day.        2011

A group of German cyclers I passed in the countryside trail.   May 2012

It's a good thing this is a bicycle road sign, can you imagine trying to read this driving by in a car?

I was trying to decide were to go next and this was too many choices. Who needs a GPS.       May 2012

Volendam

A hotel/pub in Volendam North Holland.      2004

DE KOE in Dutch or "The Cow"  is a tea room in Volendam.  Dutch words are closer to English then

German words I find, and most Dutch speak English.      2004

A group of stores at the Volendam waterfront.           2004

We saw this miniture Dutch dollhouse collection behind a house and had to take a picture.           2004

Marken

I survived the boatride from Volendam to Marken across the  Zuiderzee. Carl and I were the

youngest on the boat except for the boat captains dughter who was part of the crew.      2004

The small town of Marken is a short boat ride across the Zuiderzee (water) from Volendam.        2004

Marken has small green and white buildings and popular with tourists.        2004

A path through Marken in north Holland.      2004

You better like green and white houses if you live here.        2004

Marken is a must see and well worth a visit, I do not remember seeing any cars here.     2004

Marken is like stepping into a wonderful time machine!    2004

Haarlem

My Friend Carl, in the town of Haarlem, Netherlands    2003

A train station near Haarlem. Many of these old stations are being replaced.         2005

I took a ride to Haarlem, a large old town with a very large open market

in the center of town and I saw this windmill on the way.   May 2012

This was cute street area in Haarlem.   May 2012

It turns out that three on a bike is common. Who knew? (and no helmets).        May 2012

Lunch was a Kabob (what we may call Gyro) and a Coke Light (Diet Coke).          May 2012

A portable cheese shop in the Haarlen city market.        May 2012

I took this picture as I was leaving the city market in Haarlem.       May 2012

This old church in Haarlem was a gothic monster size church.    May 2012

How about a purple city cruiser. This one is built right here in Haarlem.      May 2012

I passed this windmill on the bike ride home around dusk, it was next to a few houses.    May 2012

That's my rental (MacBike) in front of a thatched roof house next to the bike highway in the town of Aerdenhout .

These thatched roof houses are common in this town but I have not noticed them any where else in Holland.   May 2012

Part of the bike trail system that seems to cover the whole country.    May 2012

Another thatched roof house on a canal. It looks like the roof on the Animal Kingdom Lodge.     May 2012

There were farms with sheep one one side and wooded parks on the other.       May 2012

On the way back to Zandvort I road through a National Park that was full of canals.    May 2012

In the National Park I saw this mother duck and her babys.

The father duck would keep bringing them food and the babys would get all excited.    May 2012

Zandvoort

A Sign at the beach in Zandvoort.        2003

Our hotel in Zandvoort next to the beach.    2003

I arrived by train to Zandvort rail station,  and head to my hotel, and it was overcast and about 60F.  May  2012

The Dutch love fried seafood wagons, this one is located at the beach, it's a wonder they are almost always thin.   May 2012

A few pubs in downtown Zandvort. The sun came out for a while and it turned nice.   May 2012

A cheese shop with too many types of cheese to count.

The shop owner was giving out free samples, so I bought some as well. mmm.      May 2012

A French van in from of a Zandvoort laundry mat.     2003

This dutch SUV passed me on my way to the tourist info office.   May 2012

Here's a street sign and the routes with the bike emblems have bike roads or bike lanes.

Some of these bike roads run half way cross the country.    May 2012

This is the beach bike road that connects Zandvort to the next beach town about 5 miles north and I was very

happy the weather turn real nice today up into the mid 70s. The beach town was pretty busy being a 4 day

holiday weekend I'm told. I stopped and got a soft serve cone, and took a break.    May 2012

The sign warns people of a wild rooster. I hope they are not talking about me in my red t-shirt.

I love crazy signs and this is a good one!    May 2012
